Dolores is a doula, photographer, writer, and student librarian. Most impressively, she is the mother of the best person ever. In addition to the piles of reading birth workers need to do (she's not complaining), she is in her second year of studies towards her MLIS degree. She loves books and music and movies and buying supplies for crafts that she never makes. She knows that Black Lives Matter. She has a cat named Juice, who is terrible. Really, the worst.
What made me become a doula? My own experience of not being heard and feeling like a number during my pregnancy and delivery, coupled with a growing awareness of the support that is missing for many new and expectant parents, led me to want to help other’s have a voice in their care. I have experienced the highs and lows of mood disorders. I have felt unimportant to my own health care providers and scared that I could not afford the ones who would care. I have been treated differently, because I was different.
Photography is another ball game. I've been shooting professionally since 2005, when I was mentored by two wonderful photographers. It is something I have always been drawn to, since way back in elementary school winding my 110 film and wasting my mom's polaroids. After a few hiatus' and artist crisis' of sorts, I am feeling moved by what my photography is becoming. Formerly obsessed with beauty and glamour, I have evolved to taking real pictures. I still love beauty, but I want the real beauty in situations. When you look through my portfolio, I hope that each person's story had it's own life for you. The individuality of each session is my strength as your photographer. This is my goal with both my client work and my personal work. I seek to capture you, as you are, in this minute.
The photographic moments I share on this page are of me and my baby. These are moments when every cell is alive and I am most myself. I am eternally grateful to those who have captured and supported these moments for us, and this is what I intend to do for you.
